I’ve been in the automotive trade for a bloody long time now, and during that time I’ve used all sorts of oil brands and types. When it comes to 4WDs and how they run and work, I’d like to think that I know a bit! You’ve seen what we put the trucks through on DVDs, and how remote we get. I need my vehicles to be running 100%, 100% of the time. Any products have to be proven to me before I’ll use them, and the one brand that ticks all the boxes is Liqui-Moly.
I’ve been using this brand for a couple of years now, and to say I’m impressed would be an understatement. That’s why you’re going to see me being a lot more involved with the company over the coming year, because when I find a product I like that genuinely works, I stand by it.
Since I’ve started using the Liqui Moly range in all my vehicles, they’ve been running like a dream. Using their range of oils has reduced engine noise and oil consumption dramatically, especially in my ZD30 Patrol. The best part for me, though, is the Liqui-Moly range isn’t just limited to engine oils. They also stock a range of oil to suit diffs, gearboxes and engine flushes and cleaners to keep your 4WD running as smooth as new.
When it comes to servicing your 4WD, things have changed over the years. Gone are the days of servicing only when you get the time. Nowadays, servicing schedules must be stuck to religiously to prevent any damage down the track. When it comes to servicing for both petrol and diesel engines, I would recommend that you change your oil every 5000km and the oil filter every 10,000km at the very maximum. That’s unless you’re about to head out on a big trip, or you’ve just got back – these are both perfect opportunities to get some fresh oil into your engine.
There are a lot of 4WDers out there that will change both oil and filter at the 5000km mark, but it all depends on the type of driving you’re doing and how much off-roading you’ve been doing. Servicing a 4WD is easy enough, but what can be a daunting task is heading into your local auto store and trying to pick the right oil for your 4WD.
Before you even head to the shop, you can have the right oil chosen leaving your house. Head over to the Liqui-Moly website (www.liqui-moly.com.au) and click on the online oil catalogue. This fantastic tool lists all the oil you’ll need in your 4WD, how much you need and what sort of oil to buy – definitely something that helps save time and hassles.
You’ll end up with everything you need to do the job right the first time. Keep an eye on this page every issue over the next year, because I’m going to delve into the dark art of 4WD servicing and bust a few myths along the way. It’s definitely something you won’t want to miss!
